A Queer Black Body

Monday, February 17, 2025 - Monday, February 24, 2025;
The Scribe Video Center, Philadelphia, PA

In this week-long celebration of Tahj’s body of work, a series of videotapes derived from the artist’s archive from the 1990s, his first feature documentary film Vintage: Families of Value, as well as the PBS broadcast documentary series Family Pictures USA will all be screened at Scribe Video Center. Through this showcase, an homage is paid to the dynamic benevolence that is Black and queer identity. “A Queer Black Body” honors influences across the diaspora as well as place and cultural spaces, leaders, and artists that have, in some way shape or form, led us to come together presently at The Scribe Video Center in Philadelphia. Director Thomas Allen Harris is expected to be joined by Cass Arrington, Darah Gaines Martin, and Donald Perry for post-screening discussions on Thursday and Friday. Conversations will be moderated by special guest programmer Denise A. Greene.

Resquícios e Ressonância | Remnants and Resonance

Exhibition on View February 07, 2025–March 01, 2025; Film Screening Wednesday, February 19, 5:00 PM;
Rochester Institute for Technology, Rochester, NY

Starting on February 07, 2025, Thomas Allen Harris’ feature film, É Minha Cara/That’s My Face (2001) will be shown as a video installation piece in the exhibition, Resquícios e Ressonância | Remnants and Resonance, at the Rochester Institute of Technology. The exhibition brings together three works created in Salvador da Bahia—an epicenter of African diasporic culture— by Thomas Allen Harris, Lázaro Roberto Ferreira dos Santos, and Joshua Rashaad McFadden. These works delve into the complexities of Black life across generations and geographies and highlight portraiture as a site of representation, resistance, and reimagining, shedding light on the multifaceted nature of Black identity. This exhibition interrogates the portrait as both a tool for representation and a site of resistance. Together, these art pieces navigate the weight of oppression while imagining liberated presents and futures within the Afro-Atlantic world.

As part of this exhibition’s programming, Harris will screen Through A Lens Darkly: Black Photographers and the Emergence of a People (2014) on Wednesday, February 19, 5:00 PM at RIT’s Carlson Center for Imaging Science, Room 1125 (Carlson Auditorium).

He will also be part of an artist talk & panel discussion with Joshua Rashaad McFadden and Lázaro Roberto Ferreira dos Santos on Wednesday, February 26, 6:30 PM at the William Harris Gallery, Gannett Hall 3030.
